Some of the most well known memes include:
Celebrities. Just about every celebrity has a social media account on the internet. Most famous celebrities are prone to creating their own fan club, which can often times lead to extremely dedicated fans. Popular celebrities like Lady Gaga or President Obama have created long standing trends within their chosen fan communities. In fact, President Obama was recently pictured wearing a fascination to resemble that of Ben Franklin, which had long been a cultural trend for the United States.
Funny content. Many internet users enjoy funny stuff, especially if it isn't harmful or offensive in any way. There are many websites devoted entirely to bringing you a wide variety of funny stuff, from celebrity news to behind the scenes pictures from the latest movie releases. In fact, there is a section on a lot of the best celebrity blogs out there that focuses solely on funny content.
Internet content. Memes can be found all over the internet from funny images to silly texts, as well as the ever popular and therapeutic funny texts. They can spread virally from person to person and have even been used to bring about change, such as the Arab Spring uprisings in Egypt.
Political content. All across the internet, people are sharing pictures and videos of the latest political debates. The New York primaries last year were particularly interesting, especially with the constant shots of Senator Hillary Clinton's face being cut into. Some of the clips went viral very quickly and spawned the now famous "Hillary Meme". If you're not into politics, don't worry; there are plenty of other topics that you can use to get across your point in a better way. Memes are quick and easy to create, making it easy to share your own message with millions of people.
Humor. Memes have even been adapted into popular late night comedy acts, such as "Meme Mania" on Comedy Central. Memes are an incredibly popular method of interaction between individuals and can bring a sense of relaxation and peace to those who share them.
Clever slogans. Many online companies have created clever advertisements that make use of certain internet-famous sayings. One particular company, however, went so far as to use the catchphrase "oisie" (in French), which is an apparent reference to the British Prime Minister, David Cameron. This company realized that many people would likely hear "oisie" and interpret it literally, rather than just its meaning. By changing the word from "oisie" to "king", it made its intended point much clearer and its audience a lot more comfortable with the reference.
Stretching the limits of what is politically correct. There are some individuals who have taken to personally attacking other people and things based solely on their gender, their race, religious affiliation, etc. As well as political incorrect statements, certain things, like an overweight person being seen at a football game wearing a politically incorrect T-shirt, are deemed unacceptable in some circles. Memes allow for some free speech in the form of poking fun at those who may be putting you down, but they must remain relevant and of value to the reader.
